The Baptism of Christ

Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Trogir, Croatia

This is the iconography that obtains in the late Middle Ages and beyond. Jesus wears a perizoma like the one in Crucifixion images, and the River Jordan is reduced, in this case to just a dry wadi. The Father is above and the dove is flying down to Jesus while the angels wait with his outer garment as John pours water on him from a silver bowl. In his other hand John holds the long cross that is one of his attributes, but he is not shown in the customary camel skin. In the background is an imaginary Jerusalem.
